Volunteering in Tanzania can be one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences in a person’s life. We are at the ground floor of development and need skilled volunteers who are willing to roll up their sleeves and work with passion and conviction. We warn you — conditions in the area of Tanzania where OA operates can be primitive. Volunteers must be willing to sometimes endure difficult circumstances such as no electricity, limited clean water, excessive dirt and dust, insects and heat, and lack of infrastructure as well as limited access to any amenities or medical facilities. But, in the opinions of those who have already volunteered, the positives far outweigh any negatives — the Tanzanian people will welcome you into their hearts and homes, the landscape will cradle you with its beauty, and we promise you, you will never be the same again.
Areas of volunteering can include:
Teaching at one of our schools. While English is especially needed, children need instruction in all subject areas, including science, math, history, music, geography, and reading. (All classes are taught in English. Volunteers must be fluent in English.)
Providing teacher training and mentoring
Providing preventive health education, including AIDS / HIV awareness
Providing health screening for orphans and widows
Helping with construction of schools (bring your non-power tools!)
Providing technical assistance to on-site personnel, such as accounting, communications technology, and computer skills
Helping a widow to set up her own business
Teaching nutrition and food sanitation
Teaching sustainable farming techniques
Interviewing orphans and recording their stories.
Helping OA with photography and videography.
